Every Second

Lord, I dont want to be a man,
Who gives you second best,
Looking out for myself,
Taking all I can take,
And leaving you the rest.

Lord, I dont want to compromise,
The glory of your name,
By giving less than my very best,
With each breath that I take.

Every second, every minute,
Every hour, every day,
My desire is to follow you,
Every minute, every hour, every day.

Lord, I know your heart must break,
From foolish things I do,
As you watch me play my masquerade,
Pretending to be true,

But now this covenant I make,
From now on I choose,
To honestly and faithfully,
Give all I am to you.

Every second, every minute,
Every hour, every day,
My desire is to follow you,
Every minute, every hour, every day.

(Bridge)
Oh, and every day,
I will take up my cross and follow,
Down the narrow way,
I will surrender it all,
I will surrender it all,
I will surrender it all

Every second, every minute,
Every hour, every day,
My desire is to follow you,
Every minute, every hour, every day.

I remember writing the chorus to Every Second on a drive home from Kewanee, Illinois after doing a radio interview. I began to think how easy it was to sit behind a microphone and talk about being a Christian and how much more difficult it was to live that faith each and every day. I was struck with the anemia of my own faith and how quickly and easily I can compromise it when the rubber meets the road. This song is just a prayer, declaring my desire to live for Jesus each and every day, in all I do, while acknowledging my human frailty in the task.
